Drive a 3D car over hills, bridges and jumps. Type to go.

How to play

Use the arrow keys to pick a mode, a track and a car, then press Enter to start. Type the line at the bottom of the screen. Every right key drives your car. A wrong key stops the car until you type the right one. Press Tab to spend a Turbo. Esc pauses: keep playing, restart, options or main menu. Press G on the menu to open the garage.

A typing race in 3D

Turbo Type 3D puts your car on a block-built track with four other cars. Every right key you type moves your car forward: up the hills, across the bridge and off the jump ramps. Reach the chequered flag first and you drive up onto the winners' podium.

A wrong key stops your car on the spot. Type the right key and you roll again, no Backspace needed. Every 25 clean keys charge a Turbo: press Tab and your car pulls away from the pack for about seven seconds, until a mistake ends it. Stay close behind another car to draft it for a little extra speed.

Seven ways to play

  • Race: beat four computer racers who drive close to your own speed. Look out for golden words: type one without a slip for extra coins and a quicker Turbo.
  • Daily Race: a new track and a new line every day, the same for every player. Your first finish of the day pays 100 coins, then race your own ghost to beat your best of the day.
  • Rookie Cup and Pro Cup: four races on four of the tracks against the same four rivals. Every place scores points, and the most points after the last race wins the cup and a big coin prize.
  • Pro Race: longer lines with capital letters, numbers and quotes, for fast typists and grown-ups.
  • Time Trial: every track has its own line. Race the see-through ghost of your best run and win a gold, silver or bronze medal.
  • Practice: the game notices the keys you miss most and gives you a line full of them. No rivals, no rush: just you, the clock and your tricky keys.
  • Challenge a friend: after a race, copy a link and send it. Your friend races your ghost on the same words.

Six tracks, 72 cars and a garage

Race on Green Hills, through the Canyon, up Snow Peak, downtown in the City past tall towers and over a canal bridge, across two stone bridges over glowing lava on the Volcano, or out to the Moon Base, where low gravity sends your car flying off every jump. In Options you can race at sunset, at night under the city lights or in the rain. Every race pays coins, and a clean run or a new best speed pays extra. Spend them in the garage: four cars are free, and 68 more come in four classes, from Common to Legendary. Once a car is yours you can paint it in one of twelve colors, from red and sky blue to pearl and gold. There are F1 racers, dragsters, monster trucks, a tractor, a bulldozer, an oil tanker, a tuk-tuk, a bumper car, an ice cream van, a double-decker bus and a car with a giant hot dog on the roof.

Open Achievements from the menu to see 27 badges to earn: your first win, a race without a mistake, 60 words per minute, a gold medal on every track, a Legendary car in your garage and more. Every badge pays coins the first time you earn it.

Open Options to make the other racers easier or harder, pick a short or a long race, change the graphics for a slower computer, or make the text bigger. Press Esc during a race to pause, restart or go back to the menu. Your coins, cars and records are saved on this device.

Questions

Do I need a fast computer for the 3D graphics?
No. Turbo Type 3D runs in the browser on most school Chromebooks. On a slow device the game lowers its picture quality by itself to keep the cars moving smoothly.
Who am I racing against?
In Race and Pro Race, four computer racers set close to your own speed. As you get faster they do too, so every race stays close. In Time Trial you race the ghost of your own best run, in the Daily Race the ghost of your best run that day, and in a challenge the ghost of a friend.
How do I get new cars?
Every race pays coins: more for a better place, a medal, a clean run or a new best speed, and the Daily Race pays 100 coins for your first finish each day, and every achievement pays coins once. Open the garage from the menu and buy a car when you have enough. Cars come in four classes, Common, Rare, Epic and Legendary, and the rarer the car, the more coins it costs. You start with 100 coins, enough for your first new car.
How does Challenge a friend work?
After a race, press Challenge a friend and send the link. It opens the same track and the same words, with your run as a see-through ghost car. The link holds only your times, nothing about you.
Why did my car stop?
You typed a wrong key. Look for the red letter in the line and type it: the car moves again straight away. A mistake also ends a Turbo and starts your combo again.
