How to type faster

Speed comes from habits, not from rushing. These are the habits typing teachers start with, and every race here rewards them.

  • Start from the home row. Rest your left fingers on A S D F and your right fingers on J K L ;. The small bumps on F and J let you find home without looking down.
  • Keep your eyes on the screen. Looking at the keys feels faster at first, but it breaks your rhythm on every word. Lost your place? Feel for the bumps and carry on.
  • Accuracy first, speed second. A wrong key costs more than a slow one, because you stop to fix it. In a race, 25 clean keys in a row earn a Turbo, and one mistake cancels it.
  • Use the right finger for each key. Each finger looks after its own column of keys. Reaching across with one finger works today and holds your speed back later.
  • Practice a little, often. Ten minutes a day does more than an hour once a week. Races are short, so a few before class is plenty.
