How the typing test works
Choose a 1, 3 or 5 minute test and press Start. The clock starts when you type the first letter, so take a moment to rest your fingers on the home row first. Type the text exactly as it appears, including capital letters and punctuation. If you press a wrong key, the letter turns red and waits for the right one. You never need to press Backspace.
How WPM is calculated
Typing speed is measured in words per minute, or WPM. Every five correct characters, including spaces and punctuation, count as one word. Most typing sites use the same rule, so you can compare your score with other tests. Accuracy is the share of your key presses that were correct.
A 1-minute test is a quick check. A 3 or 5 minute test is closer to real schoolwork, because it shows whether you can keep your speed and accuracy steady for longer.
Tips to type faster
- Keep your index fingers on F and J. Feel for the small bumps on those two keys.
- Look at the screen, not at your hands.
- Go for accuracy first. Speed comes with practice, and every mistake slows you down.
- Practice for a few minutes every day instead of one long session a week.
Your certificate
When the test ends you can make a certificate with your speed, your accuracy and the date. Add your name if you like, then download the picture or print it for your teacher. Your name is only drawn on the picture on your own screen. It is never sent to us or saved.
