Type fast, shoot ships, and improve typing skills!
Typing Attack is a typing practice tool that is a spaceship-shooting game. In each spaceship there's an English word and you must type it correctly to shoot the ship down before it gets too close. This game is great for beginners, especially for students who want to practice reading English words and to get accustomed to the keyboard.
How to Play Typing Attack
Type words to sink ships
Spaceships with words on them come up and head for you. Type the letters in the correct order to destroy the ship before it comes too close. When you start typing a word you must finish it before you go on to another target. One mistake can cost you valuable time as the other ships are moving ahead.
Choose the right difficulty level
Typing Attack offers various difficulty levels. If you are a new typist, try the “Easy” mode to allow for time to read the words and find the right keys. The better you get, the harder modes you can try for speed and concentration . In “Expert” mode you will have several ships of different sizes and speeds, making it harder to track your targets.
Watch out for large ships
Some large ships may release multiple smaller ships when they get close enough. Medium-sized ships can also launch smaller vessels. Prioritize typing the words on large ships to prevent them from releasing more targets, which helps keep the screen less cluttered.
Skills you can practice
Typing Attack helps you practice several key skills while playing:
- Word recognition: Reading English words and identifying the letters to be typed.
- Typing accuracy: Entering words with the letters in the correct order.
- Increasing typing speed: Practicing faster typing as the ships move toward you.
- Develops focus: Track the word being typed while paying attention to other targets on the screen.
The game becomes more challenging as you progress. After each round, you can view your score, accuracy, and words per minute (WPM). These results help you track your practice and identify areas for improvement.
Is Typing Attack suitable for classroom use?
Typing Attack is good for typing practice with 2nd and 3rd grade students that know the basic letter keys. Teachers can use the game to help students identify English words, practice spelling and understand how to type.
The game features spaceships, laser-firing effects, and background music. While these elements add visual engagement, they might also distract students who are not yet comfortable with the keyboard. Teachers should play the game beforehand to check the vocabulary difficulty and select a mode appropriate for the class level.
Tips for teachers: Have students focus on getting the words correct before trying to increase speed. After each round, the class can review the WPM and accuracy results together to track progress.
