Catch the words by typing them!

Key Catcher is a typing game where letters move across the screen. Some come from the left, some from the right, and some drop in from the top. Your job is to find the letter and press the matching key before it disappears. You start with the home row keys, and more letters are added as you move up the levels. Playing it helps you find keys faster without looking down at the keyboard.

Catch the Letters

Letters come in from the left, right, or top of the screen. Spot the letter, then press that key before it moves away.

  • Each level needs six catches.
  • A round lasts 60 seconds. It ends early if you miss five letters.
  • Levels 1–2 use the home row keys: A, S, D, F, J, K, and L.
  • From Level 3, the letters E, I, R, U, T, N, and O join in.
  • From Level 6, any of the 26 letters can appear.

Try This

  • Watch the letter as it moves, not the spot where it first showed up.
  • Use the finger that belongs to each key.
  • Take a second to read the letter before you press. Getting it right matters more than getting it fast.
  • Rest your eyes for about 30 seconds between rounds.
  • Sit so your hands can reach the keys without stretching.

For teachers

Key Catcher is a short typing game for students who already know the home row keys. This section covers what to check before you start and how it fits into a lesson.

  • Grade level: K-2.
  • Before starting: Students should know where the home row keys are and be able to place their hands without looking. If they still check the keyboard often, Home Row Hero is a better place to begin.
  • Time needed: One round takes 60 seconds, so it fits a short warm-up or practice slot.
  • Skills: letter recognition, memory of place, reaction time, hand-eye coordination.
  • In class: Second graders can remain on Levels 1–2 as they feel comfortable. For building speed: Third graders can move to speed building. Check accuracy during the first rounds and adjust from there.

Ready to Start?

Start with Level 1 and take your time. When the home row keys feel easy to find, move up to the next level. A few rounds a day is enough to notice that you find the keys faster.
