Help the monkey by typing every letter from A to Z.

A monkey is stuck behind a series of obstacles, and the only way to get it moving is to hit the right letter at the right moment. A letter shows up on screen, you find it on your keyboard (or tap it on screen), and the monkey takes another step. That’s the whole game, and it’s surprisingly hard to stop at one round.

How a round of Monkey Typing works

Each round lasts 60 seconds. You can press keys on a physical keyboard or click the letters on screen, so it works on a laptop in a computer lab as well as on a touchscreen.

Every correct letter gives you points and a banana, and a run of correct keys builds your streak. Press the wrong key and the game tells you right away, so there’s no waiting until the end to find out you’ve been guessing. When the timer runs out, you see your score, your banana count, and your best streak.

What’s in it

The game uses all 26 letters, A to Z, and nothing else. There are no words, sentences, or reading to get through, so a child who is still learning the alphabet can jump in without any setup.

Using it in class

Because a round is so short, it fits into the gaps in a lesson:

  • Warm-up: Start the lesson with one round while students settle in.

  • Exit activity: Let students play once as they finish other work.

  • Partner challenge: Pairs take turns, then compare streaks. Ask them to explain what made the longest streak possible, such as slowing down or looking at the screen first.

  • Keyboard mapping: Before the round, ask students to point to where Q, P, or Z sits on the keyboard without looking. Then see how the game bears that out.

Playing a few rounds gives students something concrete to talk about afterwards. Instead of a formal quiz, you can simply ask, “Which letters slowed you down?
